Sophie Cunningham’s Surprise UFC Cameo: Walked In, Walked the Octagon, Stole the Show

Sophie Cunningham, a WNBA star and SI swimsuit model, made an impromptu ring-girl cameo at UFC 329 after Dana White agreed on eight minutes' notice. Her walk coincided with Paddy Pimblett’s co-main win, while the main event ended in a 69-second injury for Conor McGregor.

Sophie Cunningham did not have a spot on the card at UFC 329, but she ended up with one of the most memorable walkouts of the night. The WNBA star and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model wandered into the octagon on a whim and, eight minutes later, was striding around it like she belonged.

UFC president Dana White described the moment with a grin. "I love Sophie Cunningham, and we've created a relationship," he said. When she saw the arena and said, "Oh, I wanna walk around that," White replied, "Then you're gonna walk around it." The decision went from idea to reality in about eight minutes.

The cameo came during Paddy Pimblett’s electrifying co-main event walkout, and the timing could not have been better. The crowd was already on its feet for Pimblett, and Cunningham’s surprise cameo added another layer of spectacle to an already charged atmosphere.

Pimblett backed up the drama with results, finishing Benoit Saint-Denis with a front headlock choke inside one minute. It was one of those rapid-fire moments where the crowd’s cheers barely had time to settle.

What the crowd had been waiting on, though, was the main event: Conor McGregor’s return against Max Holloway. That bout lasted just 69 seconds. McGregor threw a running switch kick that missed, landed awkwardly on his right plant leg, and appeared to suffer a serious knee injury. The fight was called and the arena’s mood shifted from stunned to sour as boos spread through T-Mobile Arena.

In the midst of an evening that ended in disappointment, Cunningham’s spontaneous cameo ended up feeling like a bright, human moment, a reminder that live shows have a habit of throwing surprises at you. Dana White even turned up at her game the next day in Las Vegas, hugging her during the Indiana Fever’s 109-75 victory over the Las Vegas Aces.

Vegas served up drama, unpredictability, and a little improvised show business. An eight-minute decision created one of the night’s most replayed visuals, and a 69-second main event became an abrupt lesson in how quickly plans can change. In fight nights and life alike, a last-minute choice can end up being the thing people remember most.
